Parade of patriotism
The parliament is going to hold an extraordinary sitting to discuss the issue of Azeri Ramil Safarov being extradited and pardoned after having hacked sleeping Armenian army officer Gurgen Margaryan. Information has been published in the media that during this sitting the parliamentary factions are going to adopt a condemning announcement to be sent to international organizations, parliaments of different countries calling on them to express their opinion about it. However, this session will be nothing in the huge noise that has been generated and it will be another condemning announcement among thousands of them. However, the announcement of the parliament has a higher status than those of political parties and separate politicians. Broadly said, during the meeting of the president with foreign diplomats in Armenia Serzh Sargsyan gave an adequate opinion and explanation of what had happened. However, the parliament could do better and organize a session to discuss the actions to be taken later. However, already we see that this session if going to be a place for speeches and pathos, during which each of the political powers will try to demonstrate how patriotic they are before the elections. It would be better for the parliament to organize a close session, during which political powers would stand above their private political interests and distribute roles for the purpose of coping with these challenges and benefiting from this situation, including in terms of the conflict issue of Karabakh. Already there are opinions about recognizing the independence of Karabakh and stopping negotiations in the framework of Minsk group.
These are issues that are not subject to pubic and open discussions. In a word, this session could be done for the purpose of national security, followed by a joint announcement. In an environment of emotional announcements political parties sometimes act like they are making a show. After those hot speeches they will probably adopt a joint statement stating “the need of unification in case of external danger”. Nothing more is expected to happen.
