Yesterday evening twice champion of the World Chess Olympic Games, the Armenian representative team of male players returned to Yerevan. Right after the airport arrival the champions together with the RA president went to the Sports and Concert Complex of Yerevan, where a ceremony was organized for them. “We definitely showed a great game, better than in Turin and gained our deserved victory. We are glad that we were able to grant so much gladness to our people and strengthened our reputation in chess,” yesterday at Zvartnots airport said Levon Aronyan. Gabriel Sargsyan said, “This was really a worthy victory and all the chess players conduced to that.” Tigran Petrosyan was also extremely happy. “This was the first time for me. I don’t hide that I was really trying to maintain the top position of our team and I am glad that I was able to do that. This is also dedicated to the memory of our comrade Karen Asryan, who passed away at early age,” he said. “Thanks to... [full story]

Armenian boxer Arthur Abraham defeated American Raul Marquez by technical knockout after six rounds Saturday to defend his IBF middleweight boxing title for the eighth time and remain undefeated. Abraham landed two rights to Marquez's right eye in the sixth round and the challenger's camp called off the fight just before the seventh was due to start. "King Arthur" improved his record to 28-0 with 22 knockouts while Marquez dropped to 41-4-1 with 29 knockouts. Abraham came out more aggressive than usual in the first round and then connected on two heavy rights, a right-left combo and a flurry of hits in the third round. In the decisive sixth round, Abraham landed his two rights to Marquez's head midway through the round and continued to take the initiative. After the sixth round the American sportsmen refused to continue the fight taking Abraham unawares. As a result Abraham once again became world champion. ...
“Gevor’s greatest mistake was to be in the same ring with me,” says Artur Abraham
Natasha HARUTYUNYAN | August 30, 2007
The 24th boxing match of IBM world champion Artur Abrahamyan has a special importance for Armenians as Abraham was contesting another Armenian boxer Khoren Gevor. After his regular victory Abraham arrived in Armenia to celebrate his victory as usual. During yesterday’s press conference he mentioned that compared to other boxers the match with Khoren Gevor was more difficult because all Armenian boxers have a strong will and don’t want to lose. “It was twice difficult to win but I’m also Armenian and didn’t wish to lose. The important thing is that I won and got here to Yerevan. After my victories I visit Armenia, hold a press conference together with Unibank to communicate with journalists.” Artur says that months prior to the match he’s watched the previous matches of Khoren Gevor. “He’s watched mine as well. That time you watch your opponents’ strengths and weakness, the way he breathes. For example his strength was that he was always attacking. He...

Come to compete
May 6, 2007
World chess champion Vladimir Kramnik arrived in Armenia with his wife yesterday. He will compete with chess master Levon Aronyan on May 4-6. “I have come to Armenia to show a good game and I think the game will be hard, interesting and definitely equal. However, I can’t say how it will end. I am in a good mood, as recently I won such a competition. Besides that, I hadn’t been to Armenia for over 11 years, and also I have many friends here. I am visiting Armenia with great pleasure not only to play chess, but also to see the sightseeing places. Thus I hope to have both a helpful and pleasant time here,” said Kramnik. Concerning chess in Armenia he said, “Chess has always been at a good level in Armenia, but in recent times it is developing faster. Maybe it is due to my competitor, as he is one of the best players in the world, and it is very important for the team to have such a member. However, the others are good too; for example, Gabriel Sargsyan. We are not glad of the fact that...
Which round should I knock you out in?
Babken TUNYAN | October 27, 2006
“When I step into the ring and see my opponent, I say to myself: ‘I have worked this hard and lost this much weight for this guy’ and at that moment I just feel like letting it all out,” said IBF and IBO world champion Vakhtang (Vik) Darchinyan. He is forced to lose 14-15 pounds before each boxing match. How does he do it? First of all, he doesn’t eat a lot; he eats the necessary amount to have the energy to train. Then, he trains with a lot of clothes on every day and on the last day, he goes into the sauna with warm clothes on. Vick says that he personally doesn’t like to go into the sauna a lot, but he is forced to do that in order to lose weight. Then he “lets it all out” by fighting with the opponent… How does that small boxer get all the strength to scare even champions?-this is the question that everyone asks when they see Vick for the first time. These days Vakhtang is in Armenia with his wife Olya. He came to the homeland right after his...

The most absurd decision
June 28, 2007
The UEFA executive committee made perhaps the most absurd decision possible for the selection stage of the Armenia-Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan-Armenia games for “Euro 2008”. The problem arose when it came time to discuss where to hold the games. The Armenian side had declared that it was ready to play in Baku and receive the Azerbaijani team in Yerevan, guaranteeing their safety. However, Azerbaijan claims that it is not ready to visit Yerevan, and that it cannot guarantee the safety of the Armenian football players in Baku. The issue concerning the conduct of the games in a neutral field was under discussion, however, in the end, the UEFA executive committee decided that the games would not take place and each team would get 0 points “in their favor”. The correspondents of the Armenian Football Federation have already declared that they are not going to protest the decision of UEFA. “The Armenian Football Federation and the Government of Armenia did everything they could to have...
Aronyan’s first victory
May 8, 2007
The opening ceremony of the unofficial chess match between Levon Aronyan and Vladimir Kramnik took place on Friday at the Opera and Ballet Theatre. It was obviously interesting for chess fans, yet many were not even able to be present during the opening ceremony with the participation of Armenian Prime Minister and President of the Chess Federation of Armenia Serge Sargsyan, President of FIDE Kirsan Iliuzhinov, President of Nagorno-Karabagh Arkadi Ghukasyan, and others. Before the opening ceremony, there was a short film presentation about Armenian chess and the history of the chess competitors. Then Serge Sargsyan made a speech, mentioning that although the match is unofficial, the duel of the two greats will please chess fans. Kirsan Iliuzhinov also made a speech and apologized for speaking in Russian. “I have not learned Armenian yet, but I think that it is time to learn because Armenian chess is winning all the gold medals.” Iliuzhinov recalled that world champion Vladimir Kramnik was declared...
