On August 5 was the birthday of famous actress Violet Gevorgyan. She is currently at exactly the same age as her heroine, Aghun. Since 1980 she has performed Hrant Matevosyan’s “In the autumn sun” casting her heroine Aghun for over 800 times. She moved to the US on January 1, 1991. “When I got here I was terribly disappointed, I was in hysteria. Perhaps my first feeling was right…” remembers the actress. Before speaking of her American life I asked the reasons why she’s moved to America. She said, “Why do you want to know that? That’s a complicated story. Who knows it’s fine who doesn’t let them not know.” For the first time in 16 years she told what made her run away from Armenia and what happened in 1988. Thus, in March 1988 convinced by the...

The small boy became a hero for the Americans

Anush MKRTCHYAN | October 27, 2006

Very often we like or dislike a certain foreign city taking into consideration many minor details. The architecture of the city, the culture, night life, cafes, transportation, the dirty or clean streets outline the entire image of the city. However, we don’t only like the city for that. No matter how much we adore the architecture of this or that building, we still form an opinion about the given city just by the citizens. After all that we finally decide whether or not we want to visit that city once again. Brandon from America would probably remember Yerevan as a temporary working site (he works at the U.S. Embassy of Armenia) if it weren’t for the event that took place on Mount Aragats. “In August of this year, we decided to organize a small hiking trip to Mount Aragats. First, we wanted to reach the plateau of Aragats and then go to the western peak,” says regional security officer for the U.S. Embassy of Armenia Peter Ford, who had gone hiking with two infantries (one of which...

“One Is Not Recognized By Nationality”

November 4, 2004

“We do not forget our history. We, the “Armenian Navy Band” members do not have any enemies. We go to play in Turkey, as well as other countries. Whatever I say here is translated in Turkish there because if you want something to end you have to let it out, talk and state what it is that bothers you and let the other tell his side of the story. Otherwise, we can just keep it locked up inside and then that just gets worse. The Turks have written a book in order to defend themselves. They have written that the Armenians remain centuries old enemies for them. The children in schools, who have never even seen or said hello to an Armenian, look at the Armenians as enemies. Aside from that, the Armenian schools in Turkey also teach students with those history books. The Armenian teacher goes to the school, uses that history book and teaches the children that we are a bad people. Can you imagine? Then that same child has to walk out in the street with that knowledge. How can he face the...
